is there a way, are you doing anything to get into the debate cycle with obama and romney? >> host: we had a similar question, governor johnson, via twitter. what do you say? >> guest: well, right now i'm excluded from the first debate. the commission that determines who gets in the debates is the presidential debate commission, and guess what? the presidential debate commission is private, and they're made up of republicans and democrats with absolutely no interest whatsoever in seeing a third voice on stage. we have filed three lawsuits to get me on stage based on other third-party candidates who have filed lawsuits. there doesn't seem to be, there doesn't seem to be much hope, but we filed on anti-trust grounds, something that has not been done before. >> host: how much do these debates matter, gary johnson, and what are you looking forward to hearing on wednesday? >> guest: well, the debates are tantamount to my having a chance at winning. without being on the debates, i think that, um, you know, you can just kind of close the lid on being able to win the campaign -- win the election.

life? let's listen to president obama as he answered that question in the debate this week to inspect the first role of the government is to keep people safe. that is the most basic function, and as commander-in-chief, that is something that i have worked on and thought about every single day that i've been in the oval office. but i also believe that government has the capacity, the federal government has the capacity to help open up opportunities and create ladders of opportunity and create frameworks' where the american people can succeed. the genius of america is the free enterprise system and freedom, and the fact that people can go out there and start a business, work on an idea, make their own decisions, but as abraham lincoln understood, there's also things we do better today. so, in the middle of the civil war, abraham lincoln said let's help finance the transcontinental railroad. let's start the national academy of sciences. let's start the land grant colleges because we want to give the gateway if they are giving opportunity we are all going to be better off. that doesn't re

about obama is his campaign in 2008 broke all the rules. giving speeches in a stadium and blowing off democratic interest groups who invite him to debate. john kerri wanted to endorse him and he said no. he is on the internet and social media and all this crazy stuff nobody had ever done before. i said to david axelrod i don't have a better idea for how he could have done this. why didn't you break the rules in washington and david axelrod's answer is because it is washington, not america. there really are sort of a prisoner to the tyranny of 60 votes and obama really does believe were certainly did believe that if we get the policy right the policies will take care of themselves. he said that was blowing down from the top. they took this almost perverse pride that we will put our head down and do the right thing. the best example that i tell in the book, democrats your heads will explode when you read this, tax cuts -- you may remember in 2008 george bush this stimulus. it was $180 billion and sent everybody a check. love, george bush. here is the money. obama did the same thing exce
